  • Access
  • Balance
  • Compression

    You want your backpack to be accessible. You don’t want to have it packed perfectly, however, feeling that you’re unable to unpack your backpack.

    While packing, you’ll want to ask yourself a couple of questions like ‘What will I need today’? ‘What will I not need?’ By asking yourself these questions, you’re able to visualize your tools and organize the items based on need.

    Sleeping items can be kept at the bottom of the backpack while items such as a raincoat, water bottle, sunscreen, and snacks can be kept close up top. That way, you don’t need to waste time digging around your bag.

    When you’re loading a backpack, you want to think about it as if you’re packing rows into the backpack. Your goal is to fill all nooks and crannies until your backpack is completely solid.

    Bottom Pack Zone

    Instead, what you need is your backpack to be easily accessible. Keep items such as snacks, water, and your camera in pockets which are easily accessible without having to remove your backpack.

    1. Do not grab the haul loop closest to you while trying to wrestle your backpack onto your back.     2. Do not worry about your straps. You may have perfectly adjusted them but if you don’t have your backpack already on you, then it’s useless. You should only adjust your straps once the backpack is sitting on your back.

    3. Do not rush. When you’re hoisting your backpack, take your time. If not, you can easily lose stability and either tip over or strain your muscles.

    Hoisting your loaded backpack

    Though you think you just need to pick up the backpack, there is a specific process in order to get your backpack on your back in a safe manner.     1. Make sure your straps are slightly loosened so that it’s easier to put your backpack on. You’re going to be using your entire body to pick up the backpack off of the floor.

    2. Have your backpack on the ground, tilted in an upright position.

    3. Stand with your back facing the back panel of the backpack. Have your stance slightly wider than normal with bent knees which will provide you with extra support.

    4. Hold firmly the haul loop, located at the top of your backpack. Move the backpack from the floor to your thigh height and pause for a moment without letting go of the haul loop.

    5. Now, from your thigh, place your arm, the one that’s not holding the loop through the shoulder strap. Do this until your shoulder is balancing under the shoulder strap.

    6. Now you have one shoulder under the strap, so you’re going to hinge from the waist and use that force from your body in order to swing the backpack across your back, placing your arm through the other shoulder.

    7. You should have your backpack on your back now. From here, you can adjust the straps to your liking.
