How to Choose the Best Self Inflating Air Mattress
Price
Don’t automatically go for the cheapest mattress, believe me when I say you’ll regret that halfway through the night. You wouldn’t buy knock-off boots, so why would you buy a cheap mattress? It’s worth investing in a quality air mattress to ensure you get a good night’s sleep whether you’re at a comfy campsite or halfway up a mountain.
On the other hand, you don’t need to spend a small fortune, look for quality over price and test it out to make sure you are comfortably lying on it.
Usage
Think about what and where you are planning to use it. If it’s for a more permanent use then you want a bigger and more supported mattress. However, if you’re wanting to take it hiking, weight and smaller sizes are better.
Frame or no Frame
It’s best to opt for mattresses with a frame as it will give you more support through the night. If you’re unsure whether it has one or not, have a look at the corners of the mattress to make sure it is solid to the touch.

There’s also an inbuilt pillow as an added luxury. And if we dare say so, this one feels pretty luxurious compared to other sleeping mats we’ve tried out.

You definitely won’t miss the mattress though, it’s thick enough at 1.5 inches to mean you won’t wake up stiff due to the uneven ground you are camping on.
Also the different material of this mattress means that it’s highly durable with its rugged surface, so whatever your camping conditions you can rely on this mat.
The Whalek pad inflates really quickly so it is very convenient when you find yourself pushed for time at the end of a long day of hiking.

You can adjust the firmness to suit your individual needs and preferences. It has a durable brass value where you can top up the air for a harder base or let some out for more softness.

It has a cubed surface which is also a little different to most mattresses, this is said to mould to the natural curves of your body – all making for a sounds night’s sleep.
The mattress comes with a free cooling towel which could be very handy for the morning shower after a night in a stuffy tent over the summer. As it’s air filled it tends to be cooler than foam alternatives so it’s a great option for summer trips.
